How To Start A Skin Care Blog That Makes You Money

It's time to put your skincare secrets out there and tell the world about what you know. This guide has everything you need to get started on your new journey of blogging on skin care.

Blogging can be a great way to express yourself and it can also provide an additional income for your family - so why not give it a try?

How To Start A Skin Care Blog

How Do I Start A Skincare Blog?

To start a skincare blog, first, you need to figure out what your "skin goals" are. Who are you trying to help?

Let's create a target audience. You can do this by creating an imaginary profile of a person you'll dedicate all your content to.

Read this example for inspiration...

“What the hell is that?" Joan said to herself in horror as she looked at her reflection.

Her face was riddled with pimples, and now they were bigger and redder than ever.

She had always been plagued by acne but never this bad before - what if it got worse? What would people say about her?

She was sick of being bullied for how she looked, sick of feeling like a loser when everyone else could just walk around without looking like an ogre.

A lightbulb went off in her head, and she knew what to do: find someone who can help remove these hideous things once and for all.

From the above story, you'll know what kind of content to produce for Joan.

But before you can teach Joan how to keep her face clear, you need to define on your About page what makes you qualified for helping Joan.

This will make your content more credible. Was it based on experience, or is it your profession to give advice about it?

Maybe you were in her shoes before, but you managed to get past it! You can teach her a skincare routine she can do at home without spending a lot of money on dermatologists.

How Do Skincare Blogs Make Money?

As a beginner, affiliate marketing is always the easiest way to make money.

Affiliates (you) are paid a commission for every product you sell by promoting. This is an easy way to make some quick cash while building up traffic (number of visitors) on your site.

It's also worth noting that affiliate marketing isn't strictly limited to blogs. YouTube channels can do it too as well as other social media channels.

Now, if you go to Google and type "Amazon's best selling skincare products," you'll see some of the following:

  1. acne pimple patch spot treatment
  2. makeup remover
  3. cleansing towelettes
  4. oil-free face moisturizer with sunscreen
  5. acne foaming wash
  6. facial cleanser
  7. facial sunscreen for acne-prone skin
  8. vacuum pore cleaner
  9. perfecting exfoliant
  10. facial serum
  11. etc

From a point of view of someone who wants to earn a big commission at once, these products are too cheap to promote.

Even if Joan ends up buying all ten of them, for example, it can only result in a 3% commission (as of writing this lesson).

However, the beauty in Amazon affiliate marketing is that Joan doesn't necessarily have to buy those products in order for you to earn commissions.

You just have to bring her to Amazon and you can get a commission from whatever she ends up buying, like a bed.

Aside from monetizing thru affiliate marketing, you can also display high quality ads from Mediavine or AdThrive once you become qualified.

There's also the option of becoming an influencer on Instagram with the help of brands that provide incentives for posting about their products in return for free product samples and more!

Brands know how important it is to get exposure as they release new product lines every season. This way, they can offer deals exclusively through social media influencers who they trust because of past dealings with them.

You may even find that these brands will offer to pay you for your content if it is deemed top quality and reaches a wide audience.

Keyword Research and Search Engine Optimization

How many Joans are there in the world? The easiest way to find out is to conduct keyword research. For every content you produce, make sure that Joan is looking for that information.

If you use a decent keyword research tool, you'll know that the longtail keyword - "What is the best acne treatment? " is good content to produce because a lot of people are looking for information about it, and the competition is still low (at least as of writing this post).

"How do you get rid of acne fast? " - another potential content with low competition.

Targeting the "acne scar cream " keyword will result in attracting readers who are in the buying stage or are ready to buy.

This is where you'll be making money from affiliate programs because producing content for people in the buying stage often leads to a purchase (but of course you have to produce a quality content).

They can buy in Amazon or any other online retailer you choose to be affiliated with.

The next thing you have to do is ensure that Joan can find your website so she can read about what you've written. You do this by optimizing your site and content using SEO or Search Engine Optimization.

Another way for this happen is by using social media sites like Facebook, which allow people with similar interests - skincare - to share content quickly all over the internet.

You should use these networks not just for outreach but also to find out other potential topics you can produce about.

  1. Hi Pitin.

I’m just curious what you think about something. If I started affiliate marketing to make money, could I also do dropshipping on the same site to also make money, or should that be done with a different website? Hope that makes sense?

    1. Personally, I would do it separately. To make money faster with an affiliate marketing blog, I’d target people on the buying stage using long-tail keywords and really direct each and every content I produce to solve my specific target audience problems.

If I point my readers/viewers to products that can solve their problems, no matter how expensive the products are, I do not have to worry about it. And with Amazon affiliate marketing (pointing them to Amazon), I do not necessarily need to sell the products I mentioned – I just need to bring them to Amazon and I’ll benefit from whatever purchase they do.

Dropshipping when done right can be really profitable, but you should be aware of the drawbacks before starting. While there are many benefits such as low-cost overhead and no inventory constraints, it can also take time for dropship products from China or other overseas suppliers that may not have quality control standards in place.

With a blog, your reputation is everything. And that is something I would not sacrifice should suppliers fail to deliver my expected “quality” – which is inevitable in a dropshipping business.

  2. It is noteworthy that authority can be achieved by taking a keen interest in the skincare subject and learning continuously without actually being a skincare professional.

    1. “Authority” is viewed differently by Google.

Google is trying to be as certain as possible that they are recommending sites with a high level of Expertise, Authority, and Trustworthiness. That’s what E-A-T stands for! It’s Google’s way of protecting searchers from low-quality content which has the potential to do harm.

So yes, you are correct that “keen interest” and learning continuously without actually being a skincare professional, can build your “authority” over time. You just have to prove it to Google by being consistent in providing quality content that helps your viewers.

I would avoid “health-related” topics though, like advice on skin diseases and cures for some skin ailments – these kinds of topics will involve the life of your readers. And Google would always put the professionals on top of search results when it comes to risky things like these.

      Cheers,
      Pitin
