Before you join, read my review Of Wealthy Affiliate. Here are 10 warnings that most people promoting Wealthy Affiliate will not tell you.
Before you proceed reading, know that as a member of the Wealthy Affiliate community, I am an affiliate by default. Clicking on my affiliate links will give me a commission should you join the platform and avail of their services.
Despite being an affiliate, I promise that I will do my best for this review to be very honest.
The Wealthy Affiliate is an all-in-one platform (training, hosting, domain registrar, community, technical support and income opportunities).
People of any age are supposed to learn and try to work from anywhere with internet.
Just by having the basic computer skills, knowledge of the English language, and passion for succeeding, the affiliate marketing training inside the Wealthy Affiliate is supposed to be a sure ball winning formula to provide you a passive income running in a semi-autopilot mode.
There are four types of Training inside the Wealthy Affiliate platform.
The First Three Are The Official Trainings:
The fourth type of training are done by Wealthy Affiliate Premium members. When you reach your third month as a Premium member, you will have learned a massive amount of knowledge you never knew about before. It’s then the time to give back and share the knowledge.
When you share your knowledge by creating tutorials and training, you get compensated, depending on the likes, shares, comments and other metrics. It can help pay for something if you do it often.
WARNING #1: Be extra careful when following the "unofficial" training. Some members might offer obsolete advice and you need to verify the advice of the source by doing a credibility check (i.e. visit the profile).
To be safe, follow the training according to who's the author: Kyle (co-owner) and Jay/Magistudios (Wealthy Affiliate live video training coach) are the main reliable sources. There are alot of seasoned affiliate marketers too who are active in creating lessons. Just check their profiles and see when they became a member and check their "training page."
If you are in doubt, just leave a question or a comment on the training page. Members are very active in helping you clarify your concerns.
WARNING #2: Sometimes, newbies will try to help you, which is good. But if you have been blogging for awhile now (and therefore somehow know the ins and outs), you might find that the newbies are just trying to increase their Wealthy Affiliate "rank," by being a helper. If you are a gullible, you might be led to the wrong direction. Again do a credibility check (visit the profile of the helper).
My Review: Online Entrepreneur Certification Course
This is the training I followed for my firsttimeparentguide.com blog. Although it focuses on Amazon Affiliate marketing, you can apply the concepts if you want to be an affiliate of other companies.
Here's my Amazon monetary results.
WARNING #3: Most of my Amazon income came from a plugin I installed (ASA2, you can find it in my Resources page). If I mainly relied on text and image links from Amazon (as per training), I wouldn't probably earn as much. But I wouldn't know about it either if not for another member.
My Review: Affiliate Bootcamp Course
The Affiliate Bootcamp course is geared towards teaching members to promote Wealthy Affiliate to other people. As a free member, you get lesser commissions when people sign up thru your affiliate link. Being a Premium member entitles you to a 50% recurring commission for every referral.
I personally cringe at the thought of promoting a service that I haven’t tried and tested. That is why I shied away from this training for long when I was just starting out.
Little did I know that you don’t have to take it literally. You can also apply the training to promote other products and services.
WARNING #4: Most newbies would tend to go for a "shortcut" to earn faster money using the Bootcamp Training. In concept, you earn fast when you compare 2 products because this is the "buying stage." People are already choosing between two products that they probably know of already but needs more push to decide.
Newbies tend to follow what "most successful Wealthy Affiliate affiliates" do: Write a review of a scam versus Wealthy Affiliate.
Worse, you'll find WA vs Scam website reviews all over the web - calling legit platforms a scam, even if it's not (not enough research done), just so they can bring in new members. I find it unethical.
If ever you will do the Affiliate Bootcamp training, try to find a different approach. Yes, it's a longer path. However, even if you gain referrals (using the short cut method) on your first few months, your referrals WILL NOT STICK TO WA for long since you didn't tell them the truth.
My progress in Affiliate Bootcamp training is not very significant yet (despite hundreds of 1k+ word articles), and here's why - I took the longer path.
1. I am not writing about scams versus Wealthy Affiliate.
2. I am comparing Wealthy Affiliate to other legit products (so i can validate my stay in the community for 5 years plus now).
3. I am writing about useful work from home jobs to hopefully find some platforms which can give my readers pocket money as they wait for monetary results (from their blog).
4. I choose not to stick "promoting" just one platform. I give my readers the freedom to decide, so I do not have to "sell" as much - I hate selling!
If you are curious how much is MUCH when you follow the Bootcamp Training to the dot, let these two WA people I follow do the talking!
My Review: Jay's Live Trainings
Jay's Live training classes are done once a week, 8AM Manila time. We're GMT+8, so just convert it to your time zone.
If you miss the live training, it's okay. The replay is available after 24 hours and it is saved together with the past live training recordings in the Dashboard (Live Events tab).
Most of Jay's trainings are more up to date but when you are a newbie, use Jay's trainings to supplement or enhance the first two "official trainings." It is because the Online Certification Course and the Affiliate Bootcamp training focus are how you can earn money with no bells and whistles. However, after months or even years of blogging, you will come to realize that you might need some of these bells and whistles to have a more pleasing brand.
WARNING #5: Jay's training, although newbie-friendly, are on a "per lesson basis," so the tendency to get lost is always there. One day you are following his training on how to interpret your visitor's behaviours and the next thing you know, you're watching his tutorial on how to beautify images.
The first two official training are more structured, have a checklist you need to tick when you are done before you proceed to the next task. Being more structured, I highly advise that you follow Kyle's training, then supplement it by searching for Jay's more up-to-date take on the same subject matter.
WARNING #6: Most of the videos and screenshots that the first two "official trainings" have are still using old versions or screenshots of what they are talking about. You may find Kyle navigating through an old interface of Wealthy Affiliate, Pinterest, etc.
In concept, the lesson is what you need so don't get distracted that the interface looks different.
I just wish they would hire someone to update all the videos and screenshots to make it more up to date so people will not have the impression that lessons are outdated. Some of the images and videos are outdated, but not the concept.
The screenshot below is taken from Kyle's blog, dated July 07, 2020.
UPDATE: Finally! They are doing something about it! Here's Kyle's blog on what they are working on to update all "outdated-looking" training pages!
Advantages Of Being A Premium Member
1. You Can Access All The Training
If you take action, the basic training and some members' training will really give you results. Premium members also have access to Live video classes. You can watch the replay if you miss them. If the Live video classes are advanced, everything is explained in a newbie-friendly manner.
2. You Can Host Up To 10 Websites With No Extra Charge
I currently have 3 websites and I don’t think I am going to need more. If you work on 1 website full-time, that would be more than enough to yield a full-time income.
3. You can build your website in less than a minute.
All you have to do is to choose between creating a free website or type the existing domain you have. The next two steps are as easy as typing a website name and selecting the look of the website which you can change anytime. See the video below.
4. There Is A Free Keyword Research Tool
It is a relevant tool so the articles you write will get the exposure it needs. You need this so your blog posts will reach the audience looking for it.
5. You Can Have A “Personal Access” To Everyone
When I say everyone, that includes the owners and all the members, including the successful ones who can help you with your questions first hand. I have sent messages and got helpful replies from members who made Wealthy Affiliate training work for them. It really helped me during my initial months as a newbie.
These were some of the best advice I got five years ago (via personal message). I wasn't expecting a reply since they were veterans (thus busy), but they helped timely nonetheless.
And if you are wondering if Kyle, Carson and Jay reply to messages, yes they do.
I got some concerns years ago, and sent them messages. The following replies fastest in order, LOL. Jay (1-2 days), Kyle (maximum 3 days) and Carson (co-owner) took 3 months to reply, LOL.
6. The Site Support
One of the primary things I love about the Wealthy Affiliate is the technical guys - the Site Support system. Time is of the essence to me. And if there’s something technical I need help with, these guys reply and take action in minutes!
Years ago, they used to resolve my problem in an hour. Since 2018, they reply in 5 to 10 minutes and they will not stop until they resolve the problem.
In December 2018, my favorite plugin broke my site. The Site Support guys and the plugin author were both very helpful, and in less than 24 hours, they fixed my website.
Hats off to you guys!
7. The Ambassadors And The Community
For any question, you need immediate help with, you need not Google. Just go to the top part of the page and type your question on the search bar.
If it was asked before and was already answered, you will see it on the drop-down menu. If not, you can submit it as your question which in my experience gets solved as early as five minutes after posting it.
The entire community is like my very own personal Google. I appreciate them for that.
Some will even send personal messages to answer my questions.
Ambassadors (and sometimes even newcomers) are usually very helpful when you post a question.
I remember when I was still active in different forums online. I would ask something and before you get happy with a reply, you’d encounter many unhelpful and judgmental people.
Wealthy Affiliate community is different. They will make you feel welcome. Newbie questions are not judged.
Another reason I love the Wealthy Affiliate community is that they are genuine and like-minded people. Believing in your dream is just the start. Surrounding yourself with the right people is what will get you there.
There are a lot of unbelievers, pessimists and fake people in the world and “hanging” out with them will only bring in negativity to your life.
Think about LAW OF ATTRACTION. Trying to get hold of your dream is an endless journey. While you work hard on achieving your goals, you need the right push from the right people – people who don’t see you as a competitor but as an ally, people who you can reach out to any time. People who believe that your dreams are attainable.
WARNING #7: Wealthy Affiliate newbies tend to misunderstood "Wealthy Affiliate Rank" to "Google Rank." They don't have anything to do with each other. You will join Wealthy Affiliate to learn how to rank in Google (and earn money in the process). You raise your "Wealthy Affiliate Rank" to be a "top helper, top creator, etc." which has totally different benefits.
8. Income Opportunities
There are few income opportunities if you are a Premium member. One of which I already tried is writing trainings/tutorials. When your website is not earning yet, you can use your salary from the trainings you write to pay for your monthly membership. You earn while you learn.
WARNING #8: Most newbies get addicted creating contents to add to Wealthy Affiliate "training." They can get paid for doing so, but in the process, they forget the reason why they are there - to build their OWN business.
Starter Members Can
Join For Free*
*The following countries are unable to join free Starter account, but they can join as Premium right away: Bangladesh, Egypt, Ghana, Pakistan, Kenya, Morocco, Tanzania and Vietnam.
The following countries are unable to join Premium, even as a paid Premium member. This is due to high fraud rates from those countries and after assessment of years of data: Senegal, Turkey and Nigeria. Source: Kyle (co-owner): Read more from this post.
So, Is Wealthy Affiliate Worth It?
I will tell you honestly that it is not worth the money if you will not take action. Wealthy Affiliate is not a get rich quick scheme. You cannot sit there waiting for the money to magically come in the next morning.
To make it worth it, you have to go thru the official training and create contents, ask questions, check out the other members' training, write, then repeat.
WARNING #9: One of the reasons why some are not successful is because they focus on the wrong things. They spend too much time on the chat box (yes, I see people just chit chatting - how's your day, blah blah blah), or post in their blogs (you'll see it in the newsfeed) as if it's their FB wall. Now I do not want to sound like your mother, LOL but honestly, why are you paying membership just to waste time? Take your non-essential thoughts away from the platform, and get to work!
WARNING #10: While Wealthy Affiliate Official Trainings "may be" the only platform you need to "start" from the ground, you will need to source out for other information once you are "EXPANDING" your business. You may find it from other members/members' trainings, or other platforms that members will point you to, like the ASA2 plugin I mentioned above.
While it is not a get rich overnight program and it would need you to keep on writing and providing quality contents, it is not like an active writing job where you get paid one time for every article you write. Once you come up with a review, for example, it will always be yours - and one excellent review's possibility to earn can be endless.
It is also not like eBay where you need to have physical products to sell.
Wealthy Affiliate helped me to get started from the ground and helped me earned my first few thousands in blogging.
Wealthy Affiliate is a legitimate platform. The official trainings work. I have replaced my full-time day job because of applying the concepts in the lessons.
If you do the math, the money I invested in the membership for five years plus is just a small amount compared to the financial results I created because of being a member.
The knowledge I get from the Wealthy Affiliate platform is priceless. Who knows that a newbie like me can also make it work, not just the big guys. And starting this blog that aims to teach is something that I never thought I can do. But here I am, writing lessons, sharing information about things I didn't know of before.
Wealthy Affiliate has hundreds of thousands of premium members who have been successful in their own ways, and we are actively giving back and helping.
Whether you already have some experience, or is a complete newbie, you will never feel left out. Wealthy Affiliate provides an endless learning opportunity.
It is not a perfect platform.
You might discover a better hosting company.
A better mentor.
But you will never find a more supportive community and technical support like the Wealthy Affiliate guys.
The "official training" is not the only source of information. You'll have access to a vast network of affiliate marketers who have different ways to do things effectively.
The Wealthy Affiliate "Site Support" serves as my 24/7/365 website maintenance guys. I hate technical stuff so whenever I get technical problems, I send a message. They take action - in minutes! Problem solved. I don't know if I'll get the same lightning-fast site support if I transfer to other hosting services. They don't only "support" - they educate me too!
When I entered the WA platform, I was completely clueless. Now I can form paragraphs consisting of different alien languages, LOL.
In my 5 years in the community, I have also already gained a "network" who I run to via PM to ask questions and advice. My WA PM inbox is so valuable. It's full of learnings from seasoned affiliate marketers.
Wealthy Affiliate is the platform that educated me on how to be successfully self-employed. This is where I run to when I need timely information and help. And that is why despite my "concerns," I am still a member of Wealthy Affiliate.
Believe it or not, what "I know" is only the tip of the iceberg. You need to embrace change, and adapt in this fast-paced world. Belonging to a community of like-minded people helps me reach my goals.
So to recap, here are my main reasons why I am still a member:
Here's the TRUTH: I am trying to bring you inside the Wealthy Affiliate community.
By writing free lessons/training, I aim to "FILL THE GAP" of the Official Trainings - there's no in-depth content marketing lesssons in the official training.
Being a follower of many "blogging legends" for several years now, I find that the official trainings "lack" proper direction especially in the initial stages. It doesn't prepare newbies on what is coming. They want you to build your website right away instead of educating you why are you building it in the first place.
That is why some people are not successful because they don't know their goals, or target audience.
While my lessons hope to "supplement" what is already existing, I have my own take/opinion on the tools or the way the tools should be used (based on my experience/mistakes).
I cannot help you if your site needs "website maintenance/technical stuff." That's not my forte. Until now, I also run to the WA Site Support and other members I came to trust.
By trying to bring you inside, I aim to open the door for you to meet successful members, learn from them, and be in contact with them (they usually reply faster in WA inbox instead of their social media accounts, which are most of the time already configured to be automated.)
You'll also know the struggles of starting an "online business" and how you are not alone by being on the same boat with thousands of newbies. Yes, I say newbies because I only see the "veterans" active when they need to help their referrals (you'll know when your referrals need help/are asking questions). Most of the time, members that are on a different niche (i.e. not "promoting" WA) are silently working behind the scenes, hiding their super successful websites, HAHAHA.
P.S. This is not how you write a sales page. I certainly didn't learn this from WA. Referrals might have signed up thru Wealthy Affiliate because they found a link that directed them to WA, but in the end, that person will not subscribe to the service since they are not Wealthy Affiliate's target audience (people looking to build a passive income online thru affiliate marketing).
And that is why I'd rather tell you everything. So, if you are WA's target audience, I invite you inside (but, now you have an "edge" since you know what to expect, learn all my lessons for free and can make much faster progress compared to newbies who were led there without knowing my warnings).
Insider Tip: Try WA for a month. Consume (browse thru) all the official trainings. Read successful members blogs. By being inside, you'll know and validate the negative reviews (which I already pointed out).
