We've created this blog post to answer any questions that might come up about what it's like being a course hero tutor so read on if you're interested in learning more about how it works.

earn extra money

Course Hero is an online learning platform that offers lots of study resources like videos, notes, study guides, textbook solutions, and more.

It also has homework help services, which could make it a valuable place for students.

Course Hero Subjects To Teach

There are three obvious ways to make money through the Course Hero platform: to upload documents (like a study guide, class notes, quizzes, flashcards, and practice exams), to refer friends (earn a commission from their uploaded materials), and to tutor.

What Is A Course Hero Tutor?

With tutoring, the platform has a unique feature. If other online teaching platforms make use of virtual classrooms, Course Hero has a Q&A type of tutoring.

This is an ideal setting for qualified people who might not feel comfortable in a face-to-face, one-on-one live session, although they have the knowledge to share.

Despite not being in a live, online classroom, you still help the student by providing step-by-step details and explanations.

With Course Hero, students submit questions that tutors may provide answers to.

You might discover that there are questions you could answer or even questions that you yourself might need to research more about in the subject categories of

  • Accounting
  • Business
  • Finance
  • Economics
  • Statistics & Probability
  • Math
  • Calculus
  • Computer Science
  • Biology
  • Physics
  • Psychology
  • Chemistry and
  • US History.

Depending on the question, you may explain a concept, or help solve a given mathematical problem.

Course Hero Tutor Requirements

Course Hero has no specific tutoring or educational requirements except for proof/s that you are knowledgeable in the subjects you wish to teach.

This is an online job, so you need a computer and internet set-up.

Also included in the requirements are gadgets and computer accessories (camera, scanner) suitable for scanning, creating, and uploading documents.

While the platform might not require it, consider using apps and software programs that will facilitate your tasks.

For example, if you will use your mobile phone or tablet to scan a study guide, there are scanning apps available for these devices.

How Much Do Course Hero Tutors Make?

As mentioned above, Course Hero offers not only a single means to earn money.

There is even a way you could access the documents without paying even a cent. This free access is possible if you will also upload your own study documents and materials. Doing this will let you have Unlocks.

An Unlock is good for 30 days to unblur a material to view its content. You may also earn Questions, which entitle you to ask questions to online tutors.

However, you may not redeem or exchange Unlocks and Questions for cash.

For every 10 documents you submit, you will get 5 Unlocks and 3 tutor Questions.

If your uploaded content gets unlocked or gets a thumbs up from other users, you will earn Unlocks too.

When you have 5 unlocked documents/five thumbs-ups, you earn 1 free unlock. Refer a friend and get a 20% discount at sign up while you get 8 free Questions.

Course Hero tutors earn $500 per week, on average (as per Course Hero).

Now, if you look at other websites to gather information on Course Hero payment, you could come across one at Indeed.com which will show Php 18,562 as the average salary.

This is the estimated salary of a Course Hero tutor in the Philippines, based on the submitted information of 6 employees.

While this is “above the average salary” in the Philippines, the user review saying that the company is unethical and deceptive is hard to ignore.

The reviewer said that the pay rate is low considering the preparations one has to make to perform his tutor duties.

Joining Course Hero as someone who will use the educational/learning resources, you need to pay $10-40.

Now according to some reviewers, if you upload materials, you could receive $0.25 – $0.75 per material or document.

If you will tutor by answering a question, you could receive $1-$5 per question you answered (depending on the subject and question complexity).

Remember that there are some questions that require a more comprehensive explanation. It might take a lot of effort to research and outline the answers.

This is, thus, the reason behind the comment of the reviewer at Indeed.com.

The number of questions you will answer and the time you will spend in answering the questions according to their complexity will affect the amount of money you will earn.

How Do I Use Course Hero As A Tutor?

The application and review of your application may take from a few days to several weeks. This could depend on how many subjects you applied to tutor for.

You may start your application by visiting the official website.

You will create your account and then fill out an application form. Afterward, they will get in touch with you for a telephone interview. If they accept you, you must take a one-day basic training.

  1. Provide your email address and then set the password. You have the option to sign up via Google or Facebook.
  2. Choose the categories of disciplines you like to tutor. You may choose up to 15 categories.
  3. Tell more about yourself and your experience in tutoring. Once again, you will enter your email address.
  4. Provide your first name, last name, and phone number.
  5. Confirm if you are older than 13 years old.
  6. Choose the country where you live.
  7. Specify your highest completed educational level. Indicate if you worked previously as a tutor and where you have tutored.

The rest involves uploading documents that will prove your educational background.

Work Schedule

If you are a teacher by profession, you probably already have ready-to-upload materials that could make you earn money at Course Hero. This means that you would not need to work longer hours.

Initially, you would think the time you will spend working at Course Hero is mostly on uploading the materials or answering questions.

Take note, however, that before you can upload a document, you must first do some preparations like typing/editing on your computer and drawing the graphics.

The same applies to answering questions. Preparation is always part of the time you have to account for.

Perhaps you have qualms about dedicating more time and effort to Course Hero, so you could only upload a few documents or answer a few questions.

This way, you will not regret later if you encounter some problems such as payment or outright termination of the account, as reported by many reviewers.

Benefits

The good thing about Course Hero is that it offers several ways to earn and to access its resources.

Although there is no link on the website, researching on Google will lead you to find that Course Hero has an affiliate program.

According to these write-ups, affiliates may earn a 10% commission from each referral. This is aside from the “Refer-a-Friend” program that lets you get 8 free tutor questions from each referral.

To become an affiliate, you must join via the affiliate network that Course Hero partnered with.

To Summarize

PROS

CONS

  • Some say that Course Hero did not pay them. Instead of paying the tutors who accumulated a significant amount of money, the company locked them out.

Is Course Hero Cheating?

Many reviewers claim that it is a scam, but you will discover they thought so because of the low pay they received. Reports that Course Hero does not pay many tutors for their hard work is also difficult to ignore.

Like other platforms, it has negative and positive reviews.

You have the passion and drive to work for yourself, but it's hard to learn how on your own.

  1. First of all I wanna say thanks to you for this article. You have provided so many details. But I have been locked out over coursehero, but now I have experience and I know properly how to work truly over coursehero. I have been applied two others form from my family. After two days I got an email from coursehero which is showing that “We have so many applications”. Please tell me is there any way which is helpful in making coursehero tutor account.

    1. Hi Sartaj,

“You have so many applications” – How many times did you apply? Also, are you using the same credentials when you applied again? If yes, then the chances might be slim since you have already been locked out.

A lot of people want to reapply to course hero despite being locked out so many times. Is there something I’m missing here?

      Just curious.

  2. Is there a way to add categories for tutor dashboard? If none, is it possible to re apply as a tutor after deactivating my account? Thanks!

    1. Hi Jam,

Honestly, I didn’t explore the categories for the tutor dashboard more. It “may” be possible to reapply if you use different credentials, however, that should be “another family’s credentials” but you do the work. They already have your credentials if you have been a tutor before, so the possibility of getting rejected is there – but please don’t quote me on this. It’s just my theory.

Just curious, why apply again if you have already been locked out? Is there something special that reviews all over the net are not mentioning?

      Thanks!

      Kind Regards,
      Pitin
